Biography

Dr. Woodman is the Associate Director of University Collections at IU. He received his Ph.D. in Film and Media Studies from the University of Kansas in 2006, and he completed a Museum Studies certificate from Indianapolis University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in 2007. Before coming to IU, he served as the Curator of the Washington University Film & Media Archive in St. Louis, which housed thousands of film prints, film elements, paper materials, and photographic collections. As curator, Brian was actively engaged in collections outreach, including partnerships with film festivals, special events at local and national museums, and ongoing screening series. Before that, he was an archivist and media specialist for the State Historical Society of Missouri, where he worked extensively with both media and paper collections, and where he helped to lead multiple video oral history projects.

In his spare time, Brian is a Documentary Programmer for the St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF). He also is a producer on the feature documentary films The Pruitt-Igoe Myth (2011), The Experimental City (2017), and Black Artists’ Group: Creation Equals Movement (2020).
